Abstract

In modern psycholinguistics, the association test is a traditional, widely used, and effective method for assessing cognition, revealing typological and differential features of different ethnic communities, elucidating their dominant auto- and hetero-stereotypic features, and tracing their dynamics. Despite its obvious importance and expediency, the use of this method in linguistic personology is a unique approach, especially when studying a particular personality. The article seeks to model the image of Lesya Ukrainka on the basis of a free word association test conducted on Facebook with more than 200 respondents, 100 males and 100 females, aged 13-70. The purpose of the study was to identify typical associates regarding words-stimuli (lexemes, phrases, utterances) related directly or indirectly to her personality (Ukrainka, Mysholosiie, Lesya, Larysa Kvitka, Larysa Kosach, Lesya Ukrainka, Daughter of Prometheus). The associative fields were formed on the basis of the systematisation of the received reactions to the first three stimulus lexemes, which are the most segregated from the personality of the writer. It enabled the distinction of stereotypical and individual reactions, which are classified into several thematic groups based on invariant seme. The names explicating the image of Lesya Ukrainka form the core of each associative field (though with different quantitative parameters). The most common associates are various anthroponymic lexemes: name (Lesya, Larysa), an autonym (Larysa Kosach), a pseudonym (Lesya Ukrainka, Ukrainka), widespread paraphrases (Prometheus' daughter),names of the professional activity (writer, poet, poetess), the most famous genres and works (poetry, poems, drama, "Forest song"), the usual loci of her stay (Volyn, Kolodiazhne)). The greatest difficulty for the recipients was the stimulus word-occasionalism Mysholosiie that caused their silential reactions. The study identified some typical associates in all associative fields, which affirm the regulative nature of Lesya Ukrainka’s image in the linguistic consciousness of modern Ukrainian society.
